Charity begins and sometimes ends at home.

Ganesh Shenoy was wondering about how we can be called socially responsible if our Parents are "Dumped" by us in their old age. My views maybe a bit radical for some. I am myself a parent and I can foresee a situation where my son may find it necessary to "Dump" me. I am also a daughter whose mother stays with her and is now in need of attention . This means that she cannot baby sit my son nor my house. Please bear this in mind before you sound off.

We do not choose to be born. We do choose to have children. By that token I am responsible for my choice. The rest is what destiny has chosen as my life's blueprint. There are basic responsibilities as human beings which means that we must see that our parents are cared for to the best of our financial an physical abilities. Putting them in a good old age home where they probably are more happily occupied and have constant company is a realistic option for many couples . Especially those who need the 2 jobs to sustain themselves and their parents in a decent manner.
If like in Asimov's principles of Robotics, a greater good can be done for more number of people by taking this option , it is worth exploring. Nelson Mandela just celebrated his 90Th birthday and many of his family members spoke of how he sacrificed his family time for the cause of the nation. The bottom line I think is the motivation and the cause of this decision. We cannot cast aspersions.
